What is WRAP?

WRAP – Wellness Recovery Action Plan is a self-designed wellness and prevention tool based on the principle of self-determination. It helps individuals take personal responsibility for monitoring symptoms, behaviors, and feelings, and—through a structured process—reduce, modify, or eliminate them so they can get well and maintain wellness.

Developed by Mary Ellen Copeland, WRAP is a simple yet powerful process for creating the life and wellness you want. With WRAP, you can:

  • Discover safe, effective tools to create and maintain wellness
  • Develop a daily plan to stay on track with your life and wellness goals
  • Identify what throws you off track and create strategies to move forward
  • Gain support and maintain control—even during a crisis

The WRAP process empowers you to identify the tools that keep you well and to create action plans for using them in everyday life. Along the way, WRAP integrates key recovery concepts and wellness practices that can strengthen your resilience and support your goals.

-Advocates for Human Potential

In 2010, SAMHSA recognized WRAP as an evidence-based recovery approach, shown to significantly help individuals with mental health and other life challenges reduce symptoms and improve their overall quality of life. Today, WRAP is widely implemented by mental health agencies, addiction treatment programs, and recovery initiatives across the United States and worldwide.
